After School Rapper 2

Lee Byoungjae aka Vinxen released 3 music videos recently under Romantic Factory. Sinking Down With You  was his audition track for  School Rapper 2. How Do You Feel  (그대들은 어떤 기분이신가요) was his song for the ranking stage. Dark Adaptation (암순응) is a collaboration featuring Ovan and Haon. All I can say is that he brings the angst and the feels every time. His rap is raw and heavily stylized. His signature is to mumble his rap all throughout. While I’m not a fan of this style, I think that he is a true poet. I am drawn to his honesty. Behind all the darkness around him, I feel that he is very innocent and pure.

On the other hand, Oh Dam Ryul aka Chin Chilla signed with Million Market, while Kim Haon signed with his mentors’ home label, H1gher Music.

My Favorite Stages in School Rapper Season 2

Kim HaOn is an obvious favorite. Every stage he did was lit. I’m also rooting for H2adin, the freestyle monster, although he has yet to show a captivating and memorable stage this season. I noticed that I’m drawn to the beats from Rhythm Power stages more than GroovyRoom. They are more danceable. With how things are going, the finalists will most likely be Kim HaOn (GroovyRoom), Bully (Deepflow), H2adin (San E & Cheetah), and Webster B (Rhythm Power). I can’t say who wins though but HaOn and Webster B will probably get signed eventually.

Post Finale Edit 4/14/2018:

Kim HaOn deserved to win. He dominated week after week. This was a fantastic season! I thoroughly enjoyed it. Less controversies, more good music. Clloud really stepped it up in the finale. His stage was unexpectedly sexy. And that Lee Byungjae X Woo Wonjae X GroovyRoom collab was the perfect finale stage for Byungjae.

I’m excited for the future careers of these budding artists.

My All-Time Favorite Stages from Show Me The Money (Seasons 3-6)

After watching High School Rapper, I was curious about the big wigs of Korean rap so I looked up Show Me The Money. I found seasons 3 to 6 with English subtitles online. The earlier seasons weren’t available.

The talent and music were great as expected across seasons. I got schooled on hip-hop and rap terminologies and styles. I got acquainted with the Korean top producers, the labels, and the up and coming artists. It was awesome. I didn’t mind the twists and some controversial choices the show producers made. I’m just grateful this kind of show is on TV to train and promote great MCs and rappers. There were many awesome songs released through this show as well.

Here are my picks for each season. Apparently, Zico, YG and Illionaire suit my taste.
