Musings on BTS

I’m not really a big fan of BTS because they are too alpha for my taste but I acknowledge that they are insanely talented rappers and dancers. Unlike in other idol groups wherein one or two members stand out, I think BTS members are equally talented, equally good-looking and equally highlighted.

To me, Blood, Sweat & Tears was their turning point and finest work. It was literally a work of art — genius concept, aesthetically beautiful, wonderful melody.

Prior to that, their songs had mostly one texture– all intense, fast-paced, hard-hitting, and rap heavy. There was little melody to latch on to. They make great dance beats but I probably won’t add them to my everyday playlist. Among the songs they released during their early years, I found We Are Bulletproof Pt2 and Dope memorable.

I like the hook and solos in We Are Bulletproof Pt2.

Their characters and costumes were cool in Dope. Jungkook and Suga looked so good in  those uniforms. Also, that brass sound in the chorus was addicting.

Their music evolved post Blood, Sweat & Tears. They started to incorporate more (and better) melody lines such as in Fake Love.

However, they still revert back to their trademark style once in a while. Not Today is another song with a catchy hook.

They’ve gone a long way. They have a great following and are immensely popular right now. I’m happy for them and am very thankful to them. They are paving the way for other K-pop artists to shine in the world stage as  well. I know ONF and other artists look up to them. I pray for more blessings to come their way.
